It was a rocky start for the Monticello High School boys soccer team, as Anamosa scored three goals in the first 10 minutes, five in the first half, and went on to defeat the Panthers 7-0 Thursday, March 29 in Anamosa.
“Anamosa got out to a lead quickly, and that allowed them to set the tone of the game,” Monticello coach Phil Gilkerson said. “They passed the ball well and had many quality scoring chances.”
Once the Panthers settled down, however, things went better.
“Our team did many things well throughout the game,” Gilkerson said. “We calmed down after the first 10 minutes and started passing the ball well. We earned a few corner kicks and had a couple of chances to score goals of our own.”
Gilkerson said captains Bill Gard, Tyler Felton and Dillon McGreal had strong performances.
“Our team will bounce back,” the coach said. “We have very skilled players, and our team is getting better with each practice.
“For many players, the Anamosa game was their first game experience, and as we go through the season, our players will become comfortable in their roles on the team.”
The Panthers were scheduled to play host to Northeast of Goose Lake April 3, and will travel to West Liberty for a Friday, April 6 match.
