<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> Rose Rohr, Jones County Historic Preservation Commission, said if the county were approved, the grant would help pay to hire a consultant to meet with all Scotch Grove landowners. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> &#8220;We need the consensus of the landowners to proceed,&#8221; explained Rohr. &#8220;We hope to get some feedback from them during the process.&#8221; </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> Rohr said her hope is to revitalize Scotch Grove through this program by being named an historic site. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> &#8220;We&#8217;re doing this for the community, not just one landowner,&#8221; said Rohr. &#8220;There are a lot of different feelings and we don&#8217;t want to step on anyone&#8217;s toes.&#8221; </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> The consultant will come into the area, research property, homes and buildings to determine their historic value and significance. Rohr said down the line, they would hold public meetings for all property owners to keep up to speed on the process. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> Part of the grant application includes a county match of around $10,000, which is an in-kind match. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> Jenn Jones and Mike and Cindy Davies met with the Board to continue discussion on the proposed updates to the county&#8217;s Comprehensive Plan. People submitted requests to the Board to amend the plan. Those present said one of their main concerns are terms that are used throughout the plan such as &#8220;rural ambiance&#8221; and &#8220;clustering.&#8221; </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> &#8220;You need to define these terms within the plan and not leave them up to interpretation,&#8221; suggested Mike Davies. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> Chad Sands with ECICOG, who has been working with the county for quite some time to put together the proposed plan, said Benton County had a similar plan and defined clustering as conservative development. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> Jenn Jones agreed staying with this plan in place until 2030, words and meanings could change. &#8220;We&#8217;re looking down the road,&#8221; said Jones, &#8220;and there will be changes in personnel. We need definitions. It opens the door to things. We want what&#8217;s best for the county going forward. Our main issue is clarifying things and protecting property rights.&#8221; </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> Supervisor Leo Cook said he does not see anything within the proposed plan that needs any major revisions. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

I can&#8217;t see where it takes property rights away.&#8221; </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> Sands clarified for the public that the plan is not an ordinance, but a guide for county policies. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> &#8220;We had to redo our plan twice in five years because of growth,&#8221; said Thomson. &#8220;This is a good plan and good start. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> Those present against the plan asked as to how the plan was even put together. Sands said this was a &#8220;locally-driven plan.&#8221; The P&amp;Z and planning committee came together with ideas. Those groups are comprised of all local residents. &#8220;They had locally-driven goals and ideas,&#8221; Sands said. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

This anonymous text message service allows people to send crime fighting tips into Jones County Dispatch without revealing their identity. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> To utilize the service, simply open a new text message on your mobile device. In the &#8220;TO&#8221; field, type the word CRIMES (274637). For those with a BlackBerry device, simple type in 274637, as the numbers do not correspond with the word CRIMES. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

It&#8217;s not the diagnosis that is rare, but the way in which he fought against the disease. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> Hatcher, of Anamosa, retired from Maquoketa Valley REC in 1997. He worked for the company for 40 years before finally calling it quits. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> In 1994, Hatcher underwent a routine physical through Maquoketa Valley REC. He said the employees were required to have a yearly physical each year. After that physical, his doctor called him saying they found something abnormal. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> &#8220;I was shocked,&#8221; said Hatcher. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> A lump was found in his groin area. After a biopsy, it was discovered to be stage three mixed cell non-Hodgkin&#8217;s lymphoma. Hatcher explained this form is found all over the body, hence the mixed cells. It is also affiliated with stem cells. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> After undergoing six rounds of chemotherapy for six months at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids at their cancer center, Hatcher said he was back to work. He said his doctors told him they didn&#8217;t feel it was necessary to have radiation, which is a form of treatment many cancer patients have to go through. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> After chemo, Hatcher said his hair grew back; only it was curly this time. He also had to get a new prescription for his glasses because his eyesight changed as well. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> Then, two years later, in 1996, the cancer was back. This time, it was found in Hatcher&#8217;s upper body and through his lymph nodes in his neck area. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> &#8220;The doctors said there was a chance of re-occurrence,&#8221; Hatcher said. &#8220;My lymph nodes were so swollen, you could tell it was back.&#8221; </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> Wanting a second opinion for verification, Hatcher went to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> &#8220;They confirmed it,&#8221; he said. He sought the rest of his treatment through U of I. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> It was the University hospital that suggested a different type of treatment: stem cell transplant. Hatcher explained this is when they harvest the &#8220;good&#8221; cells from your blood. In six hours, he had harvested two units of blood. While some stem cell transplants are done with donors, in Hatcher&#8217;s case, they harvested his own stem cells. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> &#8220;I really didn&#8217;t have a choice of treatments,&#8221; said Hatcher. &#8220;I didn&#8217;t have any family members who could be donors.&#8221; </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> Hatcher said he was told this treatment would offer him better chances of survival and a prolonged life. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> &#8220;This had a higher rate of success,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I had some concerns as to whether this was going to work.&#8221; </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> The summer before his surgery, he spent preparing for the transplant. He explained that all of the cells in his body were &#8220;killed off&#8221; so his system was as weak as possible. This helped in killing the cancerous cells. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> &#8220;I had to have a neutral system for so many days before the transplant,&#8221; he said. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> The doctor then transplanted the harvested &#8220;good&#8221; cells. &#8220;Those are what are keeping me alive,&#8221; Hatcher said with a smile. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal_PARENT"><span class="P_bodytext"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black">While stem cell research is a hot button issue, Hatcher said it never occurred to him that he would need a transplant. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

<p><span class="P_normal"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black">Last week I attended the Maquoketa Valley Dollars for Scholars, much like Monticello&#8217;s senior honors night. It&#8217;s an annual tradition, presenting a hundred or so scholarships to deserving seniors about to face the world of college. Parents, grandparents and members of the community all come out for the affair. Each scholarship is presented by a family member, friend, neighbor or relative of the named scholarship. </span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> Recently, at a high school in Clinton, Iowa, a senior boy was told he was the recipient of $40,000 from The Matthew Shepard Foundation. (If you aren&#8217;t familiar with Matthew Shepard, he was in college at the time he was murdered for his way of life. Shepard was persecuted for being homosexual.) </span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> Now I don&#8217;t know about you, but when a young high school student is awarded a $40,000 scholarship, that&#8217;s a big deal! </span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> Keaton Fuller, the student from Prince of Peace Catholic School in Clinton, is himself gay. He was awarded The Matthew Shepard Scholarship for his academic achievement and the work he has done to curb homophobia within his school and community. Very well deserved if you ask me. </span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> Well, Fuller&#8217;s school came out stating that Fuller could not receive the scholarship from The Matthew Shepard Foundation during his senior awards night. Instead, a teacher from the school would present the scholarship. While most students would be receiving scholarships from representatives from the various organizations sponsoring those scholarships, Fuller was being singled out. </span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> His school said the beliefs of the foundation go against that of the school. </span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> While Fuller spent his entire four years of high school trying to get people to accept him and treat him as an equal, this is surely a set back. </span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> Not allowing someone from the Matthew Shepard Foundation to give the scholarship away is a slap in the face. It is as if the school and the Catholic Diocese in Davenport are saying Fuller&#8217;s achievements are less than that of his fellow classmates. Yet is he not the one receiving a $40,000 scholarship? The scholarship I presented during the MVHS Dollars for Scholars ceremony was in the amount of $1,000. While that is quite a figure in and of itself, $40,000 is a full ride! </span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> Acceptance is key here. While Fuller said his school, teachers and the staff finally accepted who he was, it seems not so much. Allowing someone from the foundation to be present to give Fuller what he rightfully deserved is not making a statement. It&#8217;s not even advocating for one side or the other. It&#8217;s just treating one student like the rest; not singling out one because he or she is homosexual, black, white, etc. </span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><strong><span class="P_normal"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_bold"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black">Family history </span></span></span></span></span></strong></p>
<p><span class="P_normal"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> Growing up, my maternal grandparents always told us grandkids that we were related to Pocahontas and her husband John Rolfe. So you can imagine our excitement when Disney came out with the animated movie &#8220;Pocahontas!&#8221; </span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> My grandparents have written several books about their family lineage and my ancestors who fought in the Civil War, for instance. Well, after being glued to the TV show &#8220;Who Do You Think You Are?&#8221; I started diving into my own family history. I am hoping to find out more than just the specifics (names, dates and places). </span></span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="P_normal"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> Just this weekend, doing some light research online, I found some interesting facts: </span></span></span></span></span></p>
<ul>
<li><span class="P_normal"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black">My maternal grandfather&#8217;s parents had a hired man who lived with them and worked on the farm. This man was apparently an inmate at the prison </span></span></span></span></span><span class="P_normal"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black">in Anamosa at one time. </span></span></span></span></span></li>
<li><span class="P_normal"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black">A great great great grandfather and his wife had two sets of twins. </span></span></span></span></span></li>
<li><span class="P_normal"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black">A great great grandfather of mine and his first wife adopted a girl in the 1890s after having two sons. Apparently they wanted a girl. </span></span></span></span></span></li>
</ul>
<p><span class="P_normal"><span class="F_arnopro"><span class="S_regular"><span class="Pt_11"><span class="Cl_black"> The Rolfe name stems from my maternal grandfather&#8217;s side of the family. His mother&#8217;s maiden name was Rolfe. So far in my research, no link to Pocahontas</span></span></span></span></span></p>
